OMG - I got this set of short films called Available Men not too long ago, but I didn't get around to watching it until just now. The first part is the title story, which is about four guys who experience a comical case of mistaken identity. Rob, a Hollywood agent, is meeting Stephen, a hot new writer, at a hotel. Meanwhile, Steve is meeting a blind date, Robert, at the same hotel. Unfortunately for the men - but fortunately for the audience's amusement - Rob meets Steve instead, and poor Robert is stuck with Stephen. Hilarity ensues.

I haven't watched the other short films in the set yet, but this one was fucking hilarious - and it had a good ending! :D

Ooh! It's on YouTube - I went to find a trailer and found the whole thing instead. *lol* If you have 15 minutes and want to watch a fun, funny little film, check it out:

    Lulz on Christmas...
A while ago, I posted this scene from "Adam and Steve" - the song includes the lyrics, 'They don't make greeting cards about dingleberries'. Emily and I will randomly start singing the song, especially that line (and the one 'They don't write love songs about diarrhea'). So I had to laugh when I opened my Christmas card from Emily this morning:

    Tis the season...

Yes, that is actually sitting in our foyer. I pointed out that it looks like he's about to give a rectal exam, and my mom was like, "I knew there was a reason I didn't like it. That's probably why." *lol*

Merry Christmas and happy holidays and all that jazz, you guys! XOXOXOXOXO

"Some men are Baptists, others Catholics; my father was an Oldsmobile man."
    Christmas Eve.

It's a shame that it's taken a major world holiday to get me back into blogging again, but these days it seems like those quiet moments, perfect for reflecting on the progression of this crazy adventure called life, aren't as common as they once were.

    Not that I'm complaining. Haha.

I've always loved Christmas Eve. I think I love it even more so than Christmas morning. For me, it's not about the presents I get for Christmas, it's more about those traditions you find yourself falling into, and all those memories you make along the way.

If I were still a kid, I would have been in bed hours ago, of course, right after I left a giant glass of milk and a pile of cookies for Santa (and carrots and celery for the reindeer - no one ever remembers to leave anything for the ones doing the REAL work on Christmas Eve). I remember always waking up, thinking I heard Santa's sleigh land on the roof, only to try to fall back asleep again really fast, so he wouldn't know I was awake. To be five years old again.

The rule in my house was we could wake up whatever time we wanted on Christmas morning and get into our stockings, we just couldn't wake up Mom or Dad until 7 AM. That was the official start time to Christmas, and in a lot of ways still kind of is. Except now I tend to sleep in way past 7 AM, and I find it's my parents who wake my brother and I up these days.

It's still kind of nice being home with the entire family. This only happens on Christmas. I'm going to miss it when the time comes that my brother and I have our own families, but that's a part of life and growing up, I suppose. I always seem to treat each Christmas Eve as "the last" but I guess time will tell if this one if truly the "last" the way I've known Christmas Eve all my life, or if I still have a few left.

Tonight has been relatively quiet than other Christmas Eve's past. We had our traditional (if you can really call doing something 3 years in a row a "tradition") Christmas Eve dinner of Indian takeout on Spode Christmas China, followed by some Doctor Who, and capping off the night with "A Christmas Story." Christmas in my house doesn't officially start WITHOUT "A Christmas Story." This time tomorrow, I'll have watched it at least 4 times. No kidding.

I miss those first few Christmas Eves right after I had moved out. My friends and I would get together and exchange presents, all before heading to midnight mass. While I'm not Catholic, or even religious, it was always fun, and really got me in the mood for the holiday. But every night, I'd wander back to my parent's house to get a few hours of sleep before Christmas morning began.

Not this year. But that's ok, because as time goes on, and I continue to get older, I'll continue to make new traditions and memories. And in a few years, right now will be just another Christmas Eve memory.

Making paper into Christmas gifts. :D
I wasn't sure what to get my brother for Christmas this year - he's really picky, and money seemed like the best bet. But I couldn't just give him money, that's boring. So I made him a paper ninja:

Get your own white ninja template here, by YEBOMAYCU!

Here are two more pictures, this time with the sword in the thingummy on his back:

Sweet, no? :D A royal pain in the butt to make, but it looks cool. Ignore the uneven feet.

I was also going to give him this awesome yellow ninja...

This template is available here, also by YEBOMAYCU

However, he'll be staying with me. Not because he's not awesome, mind you - because he obviously is, but...let's just say he's not kicking that candle holder. It's holding him upright. I fail at getting yellow!ninja to balance correctly. *woe*

I made this for my little sister, who loves mustaches, plaid shirts and those hats with the flaps on the side:

You can get this Big Chief template here for a limited time!

I got her presents, but I thought I'd make her a paper toy too. I got my older sister that box set of 8 Sookie Stackhouse books, but it won't actually be here for Christmas - so I wanted to make her something out of paper as an extra gift. Since she's a Twilight fan, I made these because they're cute:

You can find all three templates here, from Kobico

I put the arms on backwards, but who cares if Jacob's tattoo is on his left arm instead, right? :P Also, Bella's hair makes her back-heavy, so she has to lean against something or she'll fall over.

    Inconsistent updates
Ohey, LJ! I'm still alive. Still computer less and still kind of liking it. I go to bed early, get up early, work out more, read a few more books, watch some dvds, etc. I do miss LJ. I'm going to get a new computer when I go to KY Jan 1. Now that school is out I'm usually in bed by 9:30 every night and up by 5 or so.

Speaking of school, other than some last minute drama w/ my anthropology prof during final's week, I did well grade wise this quarter. The logic class I thought I might fail I ended up getting a 3.1 in. I had some outside tutors I met w/ a couple times, [info]scearley being one of them, and I went to the tutoring my prof did every Mon and I was able to pull it off. I'm still a bit baffled at how it happened - I feel like I've been running about 3 weeks behind the rest of the class as far as "getting it" - but I am grateful to have done it. Next quarter is Spanish. Hola!

I don't have many plans over the Xmas break. I only work half a day on Xmas Eve and then I am going to the gym and to see either the latest Coen Bro's movie "A Serious Man" or "Avatar". Thoughts? The rest of my short break I intend on sleeping, seeing friends and watching some movies.

As far as year end best-of lists, I don't have much to offer this year. I didn't pick up a lot of new music though I did really like these records: Patrol "Zirconium" (Seattle atmospheric, post math rock, Tool-like sort of band) Insect Warfare "World Extermination" (the finer points of Napalm Death worship), Dave Bazan "Curse Your Branches" (10 tender odes to dismantling one's faith and embracing your inner agnostic), The Crucified box set (re-issue of a bunch of old material, most of which I can live w/out, but the remixed versions of the album "Pillars of Humanity" and the tracks "Straining Life" and "Power of God" are crucial!), Slayer "World Painted Blood" (not the best Slayer record but there are enough great tracks on this to warrant purchasing) and Behemoth "Evangelion" (a band I've liked for a long time but the first record by them I've liked from start to finish).

I'm tired of typing. Say hello! Let's hang this weekend, Seattle folks!

Damnit! I haven't had any problems with my laptop accessing the wireless internet - but now it won't connect to the network at all. *swears and resists the urge to throw something*

ETA: *sigh* A half-hour later, I've managed to get it connected to the internet - no idea how in the fuck I managed that, but I hope it keeps working.

I was going to get my sister the second and third Sookie Stackhouse books for Christmas (she owns the first one and read the rest from the library - so I thought it would be cool to help her get the whole set). They were a bit more expensive than I would have liked at Books-A-Million, probably because it's the newer Tru Blood cover and whatnot. I went on Amazon, and I could basically get a box set of 8 books for $10 more than I paid for those two books at the mall. So I went ahead and ordered it - it won't be here in time for Christmas, but it should be here in time for her birthday in January. ;)

I'd still like to get her something for Christmas, though. LOL, maybe I'll make her some New Moon paper toys. :P

    Of course...
I love how when I searched for info on Victor, I found a ton of bad reviews on Amazon saying how shitty those external hard drives are. I wish I'd researched it before dropping the money on it. Oh well, live and learn.

I also wish I hadn't named it Victor. *woe* It's being re-dubbed Vick, and I'm just going to think of the new one (when I get it) as the real Victor - since the innards (ie my data) will be the same and all. :)

I made this banner for myself for TalkCSI in honor of Christmas - it's from a scene in "Breakfast with Scot" during (obviously) a Christmas party. :P

I used those particular words since that's the Christmas carol Scot starts singing when he first moves in with Eric and Sam (in October *lol*).

My external harddrive, Victor, is a bit of an ass. Sometimes it kicks me off in the middle of a song/movie when my laptop suddenly tells me that it can't read the device. Lately, when I plug it in, the computer acts like it's something new and it needs to search for drivers - even though I've been using Victor for months. Sometimes it just doesn't want to acknowledge the harddrive when I plug it in.

So my question to the more knowledgeable people on my f-list is this: is this Victor, or is it my computer? If it's Victor, I guess I need to get a new external harddrive before this one dies and I lose the 150+ GB of information on it. (Most of it is movies, tv shows, anime, manga, etc - but some of it is stuff that I cannot replace.)

If I replace Victor, what kind of external harddrive should I get? Portable is better because I don't want one that's going to be hard to take with me. And I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but hopefully I can get one that I can use for more than 6 months without it shitting out on me. (I know I use it a lot, but that's what I bought it for.)

Or should I get several smaller USB devices? I'd have to have a bunch of them to hold the amount of information I have on the harddrive now, not to mention what I'll add later, but would it be better to use smaller devices less often? Like if I have one for anime, I'll only be plugging it in when I need to watch the anime - not every time I want to find a picture or open up a story or listen to a song or something...

    Thoughts?

(Also, sometimes Victor clicks when it's trying to register on the computer - it's not a terribly ominous sound, but I can't help but wonder if it's a signal of impending doom.)

This is hilarious - and very true

I'm so tired of reading back-and-forth rants about people who only read/write slash but not het, or het but not slash, or people who read/write both proclaiming themselves superior or blah blah blah. 'If you only read slash, you hate women.' 'If you only read het, you're a homophobe.' 'You need het and slash ships because preferring one over the other means you are not ~enlightened~.' *yawn*

Communities like [info]fandomsecrets often remind me of the idiocies of fandom at large - idiocies that I like to believe I've grown past (although this is certainly a debatable point), and that I'm generally able to avoid because I'm only in one fandom and I only interact with a few people these days.

It also reminds me that it's kind of silly to say you're glad someone 'has the balls to say' something when they're doing it anonymously, but YMMV. :/

    Pimp zee icons :)
I've been posting icons over on [info]drake_art. I haven't crossposted anything to a community because 1) I'm a n00b and most of my icons are just cropped with slightly-edited coloring and 2) I'm too lazy to go looking for communities to join and share icons. :D

But I can pimp my stuff here because...well, because I can, and it's your own fault that I show up on your friends page! :P

Here is a table featuring some of the icons I've posted over there - hopefully you'll all be like 'OH WOW I MUST GO SEE THE REST OF THEM AND WATCH HER ICON JOURNAL AND SUCH'. :)

We got one of those Kodak all-in-one printers when we got the new desktop computer. My mom is currently worried that the ink will actually cost more because the light came on today to replace the ink cartridge.

Except that nobody has printed anything on the printer, so it's obviously a glitch of some sort. It's hard to use up all of the ink quickly when you don't use any at all. *lol* I'm going to have to try to find info on Google or something - or fiddle with the printer itself.

    Glitch happens.

    Did u c what I did there?

ETA: My sister got home, so she told me what happened (before I just had my mom telling me what my sister told her - and secondhand information is notoriously inaccurate, as we all know). Anyway, my sister saw the message when she printed off a few recipes this morning - which is hardly enough to do much of anything to the ink cartridge, much less use it up. But she said the message about the ink being low didn't show up the second time she used the printer, and when I just went and looked at it, it says the levels are full. So yeah - either a glitch, or it just hadn't registered the full ink cartridge before being used the first time. Either way, it's no biggie. :)

needed: tougher regulation of the credit reporting agencies.
It's intolerable how the credit reporting agencies deal in our personal information and we have few rights to hold them accountable.

We are by law entitled to one free credit report from each reporting agency per year. But we are not allowed to know our credit scores for free. That needs to be changed. We should legally be entitled to see our full credit report including credit scores as often as we want to see them, online, for free.

Secondly, there is little we can do to challenge false information. We may write a reporting agency if an item on our report is false. But there is nothing we can do short of suing which is of course impractical for most people if they refuse to correct the information.

There should be public arbitrators to whom you can appeal a credit agency's refusal to correct information - for free. These arbitrators should be paid for by taxes levied on the reporting agencies, and their verdict should be binding. If they rule in your favor and you were previously denied credit based on wrong information, you should also be entitled to sizeable amount of money in compensation.

Thirdly, one of the big outrages of the current system is that "nontraditional" and foreign credit is not part of your report. You may have paid your bills on time for years, have large savings, a solid job and no debt, but if you don't have credit cards or other loans, your credit report will be blank. And that means that banks won't give you credit cards if you need one, or a home loan, etc. Likewise, you may have had credit cards in a foreign country for 20 years, but if you immigrate to the US, they simply don't exist here and the credit industry will treat you as if you were an 18 year old applying for a student credit card. This, too, needs to change. You should have a right to have nontraditional forms of credit (utility and rent payment history, etc.) and foreign accounts added to your report.

Finally, only lenders should be allowed to even pull your credit history and only when you are applying for credit. It's absurd that when I recently opened a checking account with a credit union, me getting an account with 1% interest rate was conditional on my not having negative accounts on my credit report. Employers, too, check credit histories, which is just plain offensive. UNLESS you are employing for a highly sensitive position where security is a legitimate concern (and the possibility of blackmail), employers have NO business knowing your credit history.

    Bah
Hmm seems like we fell victim to a little arbitrage scam artist on ebay. We bought a printer on Ebay for $106. One week later, the printer arrives.. from *Stapes* and with a Staples bill - For $81.05 including shipping, in my name.

So what this person is doing is he puts up auctions on ebay for items he doesn't actually stock or have, for more than he can get them for on at a regular online retail store. And when someone doesn't spend enough time searching for the cheapest price and buys from him, all he does is submits an order in the buyer's name and pockets the difference. In our case, that's about $26.

Now before you start lecturing me on the concept of arbitrage and that "this is how all retail works", no it isn't. A legitimate retailer buys items at wholesale pricing, which is a reward for the economic efficiency of bulk purchases - and passes a part of the savings on to the buyer.

Our fault of course for not being more diligent in comparing prices.

I left bad feedback and called this seller a scammer. I think that's justified, given that the auction was based on a material misrepresentation- that the seller was the actual seller of the item, not just a man in the middle trying to make a quick buck.
